Currently
nearly each television station offers for us at least one talent
show. In some of them the right of performing and presenting their
talent have also small children that are obligated to compete with
the adults on the same conditions. There are also some shows devoted only
to children like 'Mini miss competitions' where small girls present themselves like in the standard beauty contest, in full make-up, hair
sprayed and in glamorous dresses. Even though this kind of
competition is nothing new it still provokes mixed feelings and
heated discussions in the society. The defenders shows it as a kind
of entertainment for children that provides them the opportunity to
play with all this magical make-up equipment and to pretend to be a
princess. They also indicate that this kind of competition doesn't
differ much from any others talent (violin or sport) competitions for
children as here girls can also present their talents but also they
can learn how to deal with a defeat or with a victory and see how much
effort it requires to rich the pinnacle of the success. On the other
hand the opponents say that it has nothing to do with talent as the
main factor deciding of the girl's victory is her 'natural' beauty.
This leads also to favorizing narcissism and showing girls it is the
apprearance that decides of their value. They also touch the problem
of oversexualisation of children, treating them as adults and the
excessive pressure of parents towards their children what may have
destructive impact on children's psyche.
Where
is truth then? - Who knows! Maybe somewhere in the middle?
