The
90th Oscars ceremony is behind us. The race for the most
desired statuette in the movie world - The Academy Awards, widly
known as the Oscars, has already finished, leaving, among the
participants, both the feeling of proud and disapointment. However,
despite the prestigious nature of the Oscars, surprisingly a lot of
scandals and critics is joint with this event, comming even from the
Hollywood society. Its history remembers sadly the ostentatious
refusing the award by the nominee: Marlon Brando or George C.
Scott who described the Oscars ceremony as 'a meat parade'. So what
is really hidden behind the flashlight of the Oscars splendour?
Commercialism
As
one of the criterion of being nominated to the Academy Awards is the
popularity of the movie, during 'the Oscar season', there are milion
of dollars spent by the movie studios for the marketing campaigne to
artificialy promote thier movies. So, here is the rub! The Oscars
jury, doesn't verify the facts but it focus mainly on the numbers
rather than the quality of the movie. So, as always, everything is
about getting 'likes' :)
Corruption
(among the jury)
This
shameful fact makes the Oscars nominations increasingly unreliable in
the favour of Golden Globe Award (another prestigious american movie
award). In the case of Golden Globe, the jury is composed of 93
independent foreign journalists, acknowledged by Hollywood, who
represents the world press rather from the European point. This
contrasts hugely with 5500 regular
members of the Academy Awards Jury who promotes rather the mass
(american) preferences.
Racism
Despite
the apparent belief in the relative tolerance and lack of racial
divisions, the U.S. society still is struggling with this embarassing
problem. It touches even the Oscars. The
scandal went out into the world in 2016
when during the 88th
ceremony, called 'the white Oscars', non of the black actor
and actress was awarded. The accusations of favorising the white
forced the members of the Oscars jury to make significant changes in
its strategy.
So,
is only the jury guilty of the Oscars bad reputation? Of course not.
It would be too simple. It's just a drop in the sea of the whole
problem...ok, maybe not one but 5500 'drops' :) However this simple
exemple shows how the appearances of the magnificence can be
deceptive. Well, quoting an old proverb: 'All that glitters is not
GOLD'.
Hi there, Oscars for me are also a kind of "meat parade" as you've quoted. Probably no one cares anymore about the quality of movies and nominations are sometimes close to a really bad joke. However, you might still consider it as a huge, historic and historical event in the world of cinmetography. I wish we weren't so influenced by Oscars' nominations while choosing a movie for our visit in the cinema.
