For
the few years the image of the fashion industry has been changing
from the positive into the negative perspective. Mainly because of some
scandals that concern cruel attitude of designers towards models, their
abusive treatment, drug addiction and anorexic standards of women's
waistline. However, apart from all these camapaigns directed against
the fashion world and fighting predominantly with anorexia there is
little said about the racism in the fashion world or so-called 'colorism' what preciously
may be defined as
'prejudice or discrimination against individuals with a dark skin
tone, typically among people of the same ethnic or racial group.
However as some of the models have confessed the problem tends to be
more complex. They say that they are affected by people's prejudice
concerning the color of their skin in the same way as each person of
the street. They enumerate constant vulgar comments, malicious
criticism and the stereotypes concerning them as less pretty or less
educated only because of the color of their skin what apart from the
malaise results in narrowed offers proposed to them. All this
happens of course in the sense of impunity of fashion industry
workers and the feeling of helplessness of models. It surprisingly
though that after all these years of racial revolution, initiated
mainly by Marthin Luther King in the late 1950s and all these
camapigns favorising tolerance little actually changed as the racial
issue is still a real problem in our society. What could it mean
though? The human hypocrisy and ignorance towards any touching issue
or maybe the fact that all changes which were made actually live only
on the papers and not in people's mind? If so, the future doesn't
look encouragingly then.
