So it happened. The
old year 2018 passed away and the new one 2019 came. We celebrated
it, the new beginning, while the New Year's Eve. Each year it is
pretty much the same: parties, concerts, the final countdown to the
midnight, fireworks, champane toasts, lots of brocade and of course
making new year resolutions. However we might be surprised by the
fact that around the world there are some differences in the way how
people welcome a new year. So let's have a quick look at some of
them. In the US, for exemple, the Americans sing this traditionaly
scotish folk song ' Auld Lang Syne' which translation is 'old long
since' what is interpreated as ' days gone by'. You can hear it for
exemple in the movie: 'When Harry met Sally'. The British on the
other hand believe that the first person who enter their home need
to be a young, dark-head male and he need to have with him a gift
such as a 'cold' in order to bring the luck to the family. This
tradition is called 'first footing'. Another spersition that brings
the luck is breaking the old dishes at the front doors of each
other's friends. This custom is celebrated in Denmark. The Brazilians
attach importance to the color of their underwear because they
believe that the red brings love, yellow brings money and green
brings luck and good health. When it comes to traditional New Year's
Eve dishes, we can distinguish for example french fois gros or
spanish custom in which each person need to eat 12 grapes at
midnight-one grape, each time the clock chimes. It is easy to guess
why? Because it brings luck :)
